Why Pathnexus?

Pathnexus is a Lab Data Harmonisation Platform to create and maintain standards-based catalogues for test requests and results. It also provides the option to create new local terms/codes based on standards terms if needed.

Single Test Catalogue Creation
Convert your test catalogues from different labs into a single test catalogue shared across all systems or labs using SNOMED CT or LOINC!
Achieve Standards Compliance
Meet regulatory requirements by supporting SNOMED CT or LOINC. Stay upto date with latest versions of standards. Let our AI enabled platform do the hard work for you!
Integration/Interoperability
Easily convert your existing lab codes into conformant national standards, allowing you to exchange and interoperate your data! Built-in support for InterSystems products!
Data Governance
Coordinate changes to different tests across different systems and labs, review changes or new tests ahead of time! Understand downstream impacts of new/updated tests!

Migrate legacy data to SNOMED CT, LOINC etc

Pathnexus is designed to map existing local test request and result codes with standards like SNOMED CT, LOINC, UTL where they exist.

Increase interoperability and enhance lab data quality across your labs and referral network using standards.

If no appropriate tests exist in the standards, Pathnexus also enables the creation of standards conformant local codes on demand!

Designed by experts

Termlex worked closely with NHS Digital on the design of the future pathology standards – covering the terminology (Unified Test List – UTL), messaging (FHIR) and Units of Measure (UCUM) standards.

We used this experience in designing Pathnexus, making standardising your local test codes and migrating from legacy standards to the UTL easier. You can reuse any mappings you might have to the PBCL. Use Pathnexus to establish governance processes for any lab data harmonisation (consolidation) work you might be undertaking!

Consolidating your lab services or procuring a new LIMS?

Pathnxexus allows you to create a single test catalogue for use in your new LIMS or network. Consolidate your test lists across multiple labs, sites using SNOMED CT or LOINC.

Pathnexus features

Our platform supports a large number of features out of the box, allowing you to focus on your business needs. See below for some features
Local Codes Mapping
Map existing request and result codes to standards like UTL(SNOMED CT), LOINC and more. Migrate from local codes and legacy standards like PBCL.
Master List
Create an organisation wide consolidated list of all tests you offer. Maintain them in a single place with full governance and audit support.
Instance reference to standards
Access content from all standards - SNOMED CT, Unified Test List (UTL), LOINC, PBCL, SNOMED II, SNOMED RT and other legacy standards
Master Map
Pathnexus enables the maintenance of a Master Map where an organisation has a consolidated list of all the mapped local code items across all of the code lists across the organisation.
Test catalogue based on standards
Allow your users to continue using familiar codes and names, while Pathnexus maintains the underlying standards. Allows creation of standards conformant codes on demand.
HL7 FHIR - Interopabilty
Mappings, Test catalogues and new codes created in Pathnexus are accesible via HL7 FHIR compliant APIs. Pathnexus provides out of the box support for REST allowing ease of integration with our platform.
Smart Suggest
The AI-enabled smart suggest in Pathnexus enables non-erroneous mapping to ensure that your data is free of human errors.
Lab Test Portal
Consolidate all information about tests, processes, reference material in a single place using the Lab Test Portal functionality.

Creating a regional shared care record?

Pathnexus is ideal for creating standards based shareable test catalogues and lab test data for sharing across multiple sites and organisations. We support HL7 FHIR and some InterSystems products out of the box!

Collaborative Review

Pathnexus is the only collaborative lab test reviewing platform that allows for mappings to be created and collaboratively reviewed with the clinical experts, without introducing patient safety errors! This ensure that existing data flows can work seamlessly without introducing interruptions or safety issues.

You can easily adapt Pathnexus to fit into your own clinical governance process across your lab or network!

Workflow Simplified

Keeping your test catalogues up to date across different systems or new versions of SNOMED CT and LOINC can be a burden. Use the AI enabled smart suggest feature in Pathnexus to reduce mapping and maintenance burden!

Pathnexus allows for mappings to be reviewed and semi-automatically updated (with validation). This reduces time you spend keeping your test lists updated when new tests are introduced.

Procuring for the NHS?

You can procure our products and services using frameworks via the Digital Market Place

Master List - Single Test Catalogue

The Master List feature in Pathnexus enables users to easily access the consolidated test catalogue in a single place. You can view all tests offered across different labs or sites in your network!

Any newly created tests or updated tests list will automtically show up in your master list!

Governance Simplified

The Master List and Collaborative Review functionality of Pathnexus allows you to easily establish governance process to control changes to your test catalogue.

Add the Master Map function to review which downstream ordercomms systems or middleware are using your test codes. Combine all the 3 features to  establish governance across your organisation or network!

Frequently Asked Questions

Got some burning questions? Read through these FAQs to see if they answer your questions.

Would you allow any users to create and publish their standardised local codes?

In theory, yes any user can create local codes, but in practice the system aims to improve quality by doing a few things:

  1. It automatically creates consistent descriptions – ideally FSN and PT must not be editable (except by advanced users)
  2. The review functionality ensures that at least two people are involved and have agreed
  3. There is a workflow process that can be configured to meet needs so that local codes are only published/available if some criteria are met (e..g two users have to agree).
  4. The system also supports different roles to highlight different levels of expertise (e.g. regular users vs editors).

How will you manage lots of users creating duplicate content?

Pathnexus is designed to prevent users from creating duplicate concepts, by showing what concepts already exist in the shared instance thus, promoting reuse and consistency.

If instance is not shared, then yes it is possible a user in London might create a duplicate of something that a user in Leeds creates. But our platform relies on our harmonised ontology (and SNOMED CT principles) to resolve duplicates automatically when they are aligned

This way we take the pain out of dealing with duplicates even if they exist, allowing two hospitals/trusts to identify the same `lab tests`

Where would you eventually see all these local codes residing?

Pathnexus is designed to enable collaborative creation and sharing of existing content.

Pathnexus enables this in different ways, depending on its deployment model:

  • Single organisation Instance – only accessible to them, suitable for a network or board.
  • Regional Instance (e.g. LHCRE) here data is shared between all organisations in the Region to promote reuse of work and reduce duplication
  • National Instance possible in countries like Wales and Scotland. This could be by pulling all data from regional instances and making it accessible to other instances via a central infrastructure (e.g. terminology server via FHIR)

How can we license Pathnexus?

Pathnexus is available via G-Cloud framework. So if you are an NHS or UK government organisation, you could use that framework.

If you would like a self-hosted instance of Pathnexus and specific needs, then please contact us.

How can I integrate your platform into our existing product?

Pathnexus exposes content it holds available as FHIR based APIs. In addition, we provide RESTful APIs for accessing other custom functionality.

If you are a Lab Information System (LIMS) developer and want to use our functionality for managing local codes, then you can access this via our native APIs.

If you are a middleware supplier and want to delegate local codes & mapping to our platform, but access them in runtime then we support both native and FHIR APIs for accessing content in our platform.

Do I need a separate SNOMED CT license for using Pathnexus?

Not unless you want to store and exchange SNOMED CT coded data and do not live in a country that already licenses SNOMED CT.

Your country might already have a license, so contact us or look at this list here: https://www.snomed.org/our-customers/members

Do not worry if you live in a country that does not license SNOMED CT nationally. You can still use Pathnexus – we'll handle the licensing side of things for you.
